CoPro – Documentary and Animation Marketing Foundation

The 21st Edition of CoPro - The Israeli Documentary Screen Market will take place on June 2nd – 5th 2019 in Tel Aviv.

CoPro, the Documentary and Animation Marketing Foundation has been promoting and marketing the Israeli documentary films outside of Israel since 1999. Its primary goal is to promote collaborations between Israeli filmmakers and their counterparts abroad.
While CoPro makes deal-making possible, it is not a party to the deals and all financial transactions take place directly between a film’s investors and its creators.

Every year, in springtime, CoPro – Documentary and Animation Marketing Foundation brings commissioning editors, network executives, film fund managers, festival directors, independent producers, sales agents and international distributors to Israel with one purpose: to promote collaborations between Israeli filmmakers and their counterparts abroad. CoPro, the first and only non-profit foundation to do this in Israel, created a turning point in the Israeli documentary scene and has been successful for over 20 years.
CoPro was founded, and is headed, by Ms. Orna Yarmut and in 2005 was awarded The Knesset Speaker's Award.

During 2019 the Animarket - The Second International Co-Production Market for Animation will take place.

CoPro's main objectives are –

cultivate cooperation between Israeli documentarians and their professional peers overseas.

expose international audiences to fresh, thought-provoking perspectives on Israeli reality and its social, political and cultural complexities.

Nurture Israeli documentary filmmakers – experienced and emerging – from all national, ethnic and religious walks-of-life.

Facilitate the international co-production, and advance the international sale of Israeli documentaries.

By meeting these objectives for almost two decades, CoPro has transformed the Israeli documentary landscape both quantitatively and qualitatively. Today, international co-productions and sales are a mainstay of Israeli documentary.

To date, CoPro's activities have yielded between 5 and 8 million shekels (approximately two million dollars) in annual foreign investments in Israeli documentaries. To place this in the local context, Israeli law requires the Israel Film Council to invest 10 million shekels in Israeli documentaries annually. In other words, Israeli documentaries receive an annual 35% budgetary boost thanks to the co-production deals mediated by CoPro. Given the limited size of the local market and audience, creative partnerships beyond Israel’s borders ensure that quality independent Israeli documentary continues to flourish.

CoPro’s achievements in numbers:

  • 661 international documentary co-productions.
  • 340 buyers and investors from leading television networks and film funds around the globe have come to Israel (including: Head of programming at BBC Four, Head of programming of the prestigious Theme Evenings program at ZDF/ARTE, Head of Educational Television in Canada, the Sundance Foundation and more).
  • 93,064,000 shekels have been invested in Israeli documentary films through CoPro’s activities.
  • 330 films have been broadcasted on dozens of TV stations in Israel and abroad.
