Copro – Documentary Marketing Foundation (R.A)
CoPro 15- The Israel Documentary Screen Market
May 26th - June 2nd, 2013
Copro is the first and only organization of its sort in Israel that serves as an independent marketing channel for documentary films.
CoPro is a registered non-profit organization that promotes the making of documentaries in Israel by arranging for Israeli filmmakers and producers to meet television network executives and producers from around the world, thereby creating a cultural dialogue and encouraging joint productions.
During the 14 years of its existence CoPro has earned a reputation and secured real economic achievements, creating a revolution in the scale of international co-productions for Israeli documentaries. It has also been responsible for a change in mindset; as a result of its work not only have their been many joint productions but there is also an understanding of the need to obtain financial support from non-Israeli sources for our films. CoPro works to pass on to millions of households around the world the message of Israeli and Palestinian documentary filmmakers and their angle on the complexities of Israeli society. This way it provides audiences with fresh viewpoints and understandings of life in Israel.
CoPro also acts as a model for bodies promoting other genres within the cinema apart from documentaries. Despite the fact that the organization’s purpose is to market Israeli documentaries abroad, a result of its efforts is the promotion and marketing of Israeli films within the country. This is because the foreign money invested in Israeli films allows the production of high quality documentaries that justify distribution to cinemas and screening on the Israeli documentary channels. This draws a large Israeli audience.
About 150 Commissioning editors and Film Foundations representatives from all over the world have to date attended CoPro events. The Fund also encourages creating links with natural partners for co-productions – the geographic neighbors of the countries in the Mediterranean basin.
Over 250 films have been co-produced so far through the various programs the organization runs. In 2005 CoPro won the Knesset Speaker’s prize for its work.
The organization was founded and is run by Orna Yarmut.
The highpoint of CoPro’s annual program is The Israel Documentary Screen Market, which takes place every year in the spring.
