FRENCH PITCHING PROJECTS
COPRO-DOCUMENTARY SCREEN MARKET
TEL AVIV, MAY 27-JUNE 3, 2012

Jews and Muslims, so Far so Close

Director Karim Miské
Producer Anne Labro
Company Compagnie des Phares et Balises

In people’s minds, Jews and Muslims have become the archetype of sworn enemies in an endless conflict. And yet, history shows us that the tension is quite recent, starting merely 150 years ago. By going back to the mythical times of Abraham, up until today, this 4-part series explores what could be the world’s oldest family feud. The goal is not to describe a golden age where today’s enemies lived in perfect harmony until the 19th century, but rather to deconstruct historical misbelieves.

No Land’s Song

Director Ayat Najafi
Producer Anne Grange
Company CHAZ Productions

Sara, a young Iranian composer, tries to organize a concert in Tehran. The film follows all the preparation of the event to the concert itself, highlight of the film. Her adventure will let us travel between Tehran and Paris where Sara collaborates with three French singers, celebrating the Iranian song in an attempt to reconcile the Tehran of the past and present.

Sheket

Director Anat Even
Producers Jean Bigot, Anat Even
Company Rouge Productions

For the 1st time after many years, three Jewish and Palestinian women come back to the area where they were born, grew up and lived. It has become a green park - a touristic resort by the sea. Sheket tells a story of a disappeared place that its existence is alive and burnt only in its habitant’s memories.

The Battle for Rio

Director Gonzalo Arijon
Producer Christoph Jörg
Company Pumpernickel Films

Rio de Janeiro – in 2009, the Brazilian government began to tackle a “pacification Process” in 50 favelas to get rid of the drug-dealers, give back the favelas to their Occupants and to improve their living conditions. But with the World Cup (2014) and the Olympic Games (2016) looming and land prices soaring, could the whole thing be just a facade?

The Maghrebim

Director Ivan Boccara
Producers Karim Aitouna & Thomas Micoulet
Company Hautlesmains Productions

A rediscovery of his parent’s archival images led Ivan Boccara to question his roots.
His identity of the whole Jewish population who left Morocco almost 40 years ago.

Mikhail Gorbachev

Director Gulya Mirzoeva
Producer Christoph Jörg
Company Pumpernickel Films

“Mikhail Gorbatchev: the man behind the myth” will be Gorbatchev’s political last will and testament. This documentary with unprecedented access is not only a backstage look at the key events of 20th-century history whose outcomes Gorbachev helped determine as leader of the USSR, but it also witnesses his whirlwind career and his reflections on larger themes such as the ideal society, Communism, Marxism, the metaphysics of power and money, war and peace. The life of a political figure of Gorbatchev’s stature involves all the elements of a Shakespearian tragedy: conspiracies, intrigues, betrayals, and state secrets. “MG: the man behind the myth” will tell the story of the 20th century Soviet Union not in terms of official history, nor from the perspective of Communism’s detractors or dissidents, but from ground level, in the first person.
